<br />
I thought about this for a while and came to the conclusion that it will be easier to start anew than to modify the design of this blog to meet my new needs.<br />
<br />
My new site is www.monaiordache.com.<br />
<br />
Hope to see you there. Thank you.Monahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07727268951360769478noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8945920546145690381.post-19553429786247903642016-07-19T15:33:00.002-04:002016-07-19T15:33:35.342-04:00#WorldwatercolormonthMore sketches part of my attempt of completing 31 days of sketching. I did miss few days already when things got in the way.<br />
<br />
I am also working on the layout of the blog. After all these years, I think the time has come to give focus, purpose and method to this site. Or move it on a different platform. It remains to be seen how things will turn out.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
found Marie’s story the best part of the book’s historic recreation. We experience the obstacle course laid out before these aspiring dancing girls. The unflinching standards of performance, dress, and decorum that serve as a sieve, filtering out all but the most ruthlessly determined and privileged.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Marie is only able to advance by selfish dedication to art, and the opportunity to earn a small wage modelling nude for the 50 year old Degas.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
The girl’s never very deep innocence is peeled off bit by bit as Degas’ drawings of her developing body become sought after by ardent collectors.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Meanwhile her success as a dancer becomes a two-edged sword. Elevation inside the opera putting greater and greater demand on her to pay for tutors, purchase silk slippers and tarlatan skirts</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
).</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
This wax model over an armature of wire, leather and old paint brushes, dressed in actual clothing and with a wig of real hair, becomes the ultimate expression of Degas’ obsession with drawing Marie.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
However, public reception to the sculpture was mixed.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
The 3/4 life size figure is lauded as the first truly modern sculpture. A triumph of realism in art. Degas turning his back on the pearly-white floating nymphs found cluttering every over-stuffed parlor and gilded brothel in Paris.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Yet, <em>The Little Dancer</em> was simultaneously rejected as simply too ugly. A female ape, a barbarian Aztec, a sinewy-muscled circus acrobat.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Given the frank realism of the work, reaction to the sculpture is also the hone</div>

<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Not really.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
I’m not going to make any rash decisions – like swearing off tinting drawings.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Well maybe I will for a while.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Everything goes in phases. But I still need to keep it in reserve for challenging situations.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Draw now / paint later is still the best way to get results when you’re pressed for time and the final presentation matters.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
I suppose my main take away is that there’s still a long ways to go towards the mastery of ink – towards even greater range of expression – more interesting marks.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Even as my painting evolves in parallel.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">
Right now we are packing our bags for a month long painting trip. I hope to have more definitive things to say on this topic when I get back. So stay tuned, and I’ll be haunting your comments from our hotel wifi.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;">

One of the sketches from the last Urban Sketchers meet at the Botanical Garden - the alpine gardens.<br />
The paper seems to be hot press - don't know the name. I want to use all the paper I already have before buying more - at least in theory.<br />

Color first, then some line. Every day, I take the same streets but yesterday I caught a glimpse of this wall:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYNYJK4i9vEeqiooQYvVxh0b9CU60K7NMfCOwfopsY5Ano2q7-flG2Kx-ni0Ex4Mll9Tp-rcDCW_Tbm_n3SVlHEndJpN_2A3OEtilpXX9-lqAjkekLHvnx-cukjLudBXdl5Qw-69hQ2M_Z/s1600/Wall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYNYJK4i9vEeqiooQYvVxh0b9CU60K7NMfCOwfopsY5Ano2q7-flG2Kx-ni0Ex4Mll9Tp-rcDCW_Tbm_n3SVlHEndJpN_2A3OEtilpXX9-lqAjkekLHvnx-cukjLudBXdl5Qw-69hQ2M_Z/s640/Wall.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
A plain, grey brick wall on an old and somewhat decrepit building.Only that this time, my mind recorded ...elephants marching!!! I am not kidding ... I went back to take a picture of the wall and then added the elephants when I got home.<br />

I could not resist buying this fruit/vegetable, it was evident that it would be a great model to sketch. However. by the time I actually sat down to do that, few days had passed and the melon started to dry a little. I added cherries to the composition just to have some contrast. Sketched on a gessoed page - over an older sketch I did not like.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Silver and red tiger eye 18" necklace. The biggest silver beads are aprox 2mm, the other beads are 1.5 mm or less.<br />
<br />
I have not found nice silver findings yet - spacers and the like. So I kept the design super simple, but I am happy with the results. I think my favorite are the ametyst bracelet, the hand hammered chain and the turquoise and silver bracelet. I have left over beads and I will probably make another triple bracelet - silver, red tiger eye and maybe something else. I do have some turquoise left as well - 4 and 6 mm beads - their fate was not decided yet. To be continued ...Monahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07727268951360769478noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8945920546145690381.post-89148333284892195832016-06-13T20:14:00.001-04:002016-06-13T20:18:00.112-04:00Promises...... are meant to not be kept it seems. I covered the page with gesso - and the sketch of the cathedral that I did not like. I decided to sketch a pepper in watercolors, crayons and watercolor pencils. the process was log, I got hungry and I started eating my model ...<br />

This book will most likely be used for ink, line sketches, dry media. Definitely not for washes. I mean these are all the sketches I managed to do there ....<br />
<br />
This is the Se - the cathedral. I found a bench on the side and I sketched from there. The place is extremely crowded - people, tuk-tuks, trams, cars .... Impossible to sketch from the sidewalk - there are no sidewalks to speak of. A better vantage point would have been across from where I was sitting, but that was right in the middle of traffic ...<br />

I tried different variations at home, hoping to find a better "recipe" to approach the subjects in the field. I don't have it yet, but I think I prefer the bottom sketch. It has more white space, even though the colors are dull. I have to keep reminding myself to use more water and leave the whites ....</div>

I liked how the tulips spread in space, the shape reminded me of a peacock tail; leaves almost separated from the stems and the flowers as if they did not belong together. I had some watercolor pencils handy...</div>

That's when I decided to sketch the actors with my left hand - a win-win situation for the practice and the waistline.<br />

I hoped to be able to use the ipad and some apps to post pics to the blog. I thought I could speed up the uploading process and also get rid of the grey background of the scan. Sunday was the monthly meeting if the Urban Sketchers. Not the best day for outdoor sketching as it was windy and -2C in the morning. I did not last very long outside, I did not have enough layers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In Fredericton I broke the moratorium on art supplies purchases and I bought 3 sketchbooks. Impulse purchases that I know regret...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first one is Rendr - it is true that the color does not bleed, but the page has a plastic feel to it and it is definitely not good for watercolors. Gouache or acrylic might work better. I will probably use the Pentel pocket brush. I should have bought a watercolor pad instead ... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br />
This is a FLUID pad 4 x 6. This one works better with watercolors. I sketched the dome from across the street at de la Gauchetiere. - through the windows 0 until the security guard told me I cannot sketch there anymore...<br />

I took a walk and the only store that was still open was ... Drum roll ... The art store!!! Of course I found stuff that I don't find inMontreal and I broke the moratorium. I bought sketchboks: a small Pentallic, one with pages that do not bleed and one with pages that look like ledger pages. In this one I will probably try to channel Lapin.<br />
<br />
I ended the evening having great food, local beer and honey from the roof top beehive.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The next morning I sketched the view from my window and the hotel. Crowne Plaza is across the street from the theater and the convention centre. I cannot believe that I got so much <i>detail</i> in. Not only did the building fir, but I have stairs .. and sidewalk ... and even a car! All this was possible because of a measuring trick that <a href="http://stephaniebower.blogspot.ca/">Stephanie Bower</a> teaches in her Craftsy class.</div>
